Takeaways and Beers: A Match Made in Heaven

International Beer Day is almost upon us – as if we needed an excuse to break out the beers! The day falls on 6 August, and as it draws closer were trying to decide which beers we’re going to wash our takeaway down with. Here’s what we’re thinking…

Pizza and Peroni or Moretti

The Italians certainly know a thing or two about great food, and we’re sure you’ll agree that the classic pairing of pizza and Peroni takes some beating. Perfect for hot and sunny weather, a chilled Peroni makes the ideal partner to your favourite takeaway pizza – whether you prefer yours thin and crispy or deep pan, topped with spicy pepperoni or decadent Quattro formaggi. Peroni has been dubbed the UK’s “poshest beer”, but another Italian favourite, Birra Moretti, also makes a great beer choice for an Italian takeaway.

Indian and Cobra or Kingfisher

If you’re in the mood for an Indian takeaway on International Beer Day, make sure you wash it down with a chilled bottle of Cobra. Made in the UK and India, Cobra is the beer of choice for Indian takeaway fans as it goes so beautifully with your favourite curry – in fact, it was invented to fill a gap in the market for a less gassy lager to enjoy with Indian food. Enjoyed by real ale fans and lager drinkers alike, it’s the ideal Indian cuisine pairing whether you’re a Korma person or a hardcore Vindaloo lover – and there’s even a zero-alcohol version if you’re tee-total or avoiding alcohol! Alternatively, enjoy your curry with an icy-cool pint of Kingfisher ale.

Pies and your local beer

When you’re indulging in a classic British pie, you can’t go wrong with a classic British beer to go with it. With so many to choose from here in the UK, a good way to settle on a beer for the evening is to sample some from your nearest brewery – whether that’s Old Hooky down in the Cotswolds or Newcastle Brown Ale up in Northumberland.

Chinese and Tsingtao

If you’re going to order a Chinese for International Beer Day, go authentic with a Chinese beer. Tsingtao is among the best-known Chinese beers here in the UK. It’s a German-style beer with a malty flavour that pairs well with all your Chinese favourites, complimenting powerful flavours such as ginger without overpowering some of the more subtle flavours of Chinese cuisine. Even better, it’ll help cool you down if the summer heat is getting to you!

Thai and Singha or Chang

If it’s a Thai takeaway that you’re ordering, you have a couple of well-known Thai beers to choose from. For a crisp German-style lager, try Singha, which has a light flavour that goes well with spicy Thai food. For something a little stronger, try the more malty Chang – a Thai beer instantly recognisable by the two elephants on its green label.
