On an average, one out every 16 people in the UK has diabetes. If you are living with this condition, you know that there are many foods that you have to steer clear from.

However, takeaway does not have to be one of them. There are many options that you could choose from today, and you won’t have to miss out on this culinary experience. The key is knowing where to look and what dishes to pick. You also need to keep an eye out for the amount of carbohydrates and the portion size.

Here are some of the most popular takeaway options for people with diabetes.

Fish and Chips

Let’s start things off with fish and chips – one of the most popular dishes in the UK and a staple since people started eating it in the 1860s. You can still enjoy it even if you have diabetes, but there are some things you need to keep in mind.

First, you can order a smaller portion to limit the carbs and optimise the other macronutrients. Second, you can try removing the batter from the fish. Finally, ask the provider to cut the chips in thick slices, so they absorb less fat while being cooked.

Pizza

Another popular takeaway food in the UK that is the Italian classic- pizza. What makes it very successful is that the classic versions have found ways to stay interesting while new flavours allow enthusiasts to experience something new from time to time.

If you have diabetes and you suddenly have a craving for pizza, make sure that you regulate the portion sizes and be mindful about the toppings. Ask for pans with thin crusts and order an extra side of salad to balance the calories and fat.

Burger and Chips

If you are like most Britons, you can’t say no to burger and chips, and thanks to diabetes-friendly takeaways, you won’t have to.

Just make sure to ask for the lean or veggie version if it is available. You should also skip on the cheese and mayonnaise.

It would also be a good idea to cut the carbs by going bun-less and adding more salad, but watch out for the dressing.

Chinese Food

Chinese food comes in many forms, some of which can be considered diabetes-friendly. If you order Chinese, try the broth-based soups and steamed fragrant rice and noodles.

Again, be careful about the portion size as the key to a diabetes-friendly diet is moderation. Also, load up on healthy side dishes like stir-fried veggies.

Try to stay away from spring rolls and satays.

Indian Food

Do you have a hankering for Indian food?  Don’t despair! You can indulge in it from time to time, even if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Just make sure you limit not only the carbs but fat as well. Fat can put more strain on your heart and make it harder for you to control your blood sugar levels.

When going for Indian food, try the tandoori or tikka. They are both baked and low in fat. Pair this with boiled or steamed rice instead of fried rice or pilau. For more ideas see here

Between chapatti and naan bread, choose chapatti. It is rich in fibre, has a high amount of protein, and contains complex fats, which is what you need. Also, it is more filling and helps you stay full for a longer period.
